Vintage Typewriter Serial Number Guide

Serial numbers become useful only after the correct maker and model family are established.

Serial numbers date production, not ownership. A serial table can often place a machine within a production range, but it does not prove when it was sold, used, serviced, repainted, or paired with its current case.

Record the number exactly

Photograph the serial number before cleaning. Transcribe prefixes, suffixes, spaces, and dashes. Similar model families sometimes use different sequences, and a missing letter can send you to the wrong range.

Identify the family before dating

  1. Confirm the manufacturer or rebrand relationship.
  2. Identify the model family from body and control layout.
  3. Locate a serial table specific to that brand and family.
  4. Read the table notes. Some rows give the first serial produced in a year; others give ranges or end-of-year numbers.
  5. Save the source and access date with your collection record.

Where serial numbers are often found

These are tendencies, not universal rules. Consult model-specific references before removing panels or turning a heavy standard machine over.

Use the Typewriter Database carefully

The Typewriter Database organizes serial-number tables, model galleries, typefaces, and patents across a large number of brands. Its own table notes explain that displayed dates may represent first serial numbers for a year unless otherwise noted. Read those notes instead of treating the closest visible year as an automatic answer.

Record a date range, not false precision

When a serial falls between annual entries, write “produced during 19XX” or “serial range consistent with 19XX–19XX” depending on the source. If the table is incomplete, say so. A defensible range is more valuable than a precise but unsupported date.

Cross-check the machine

Body style, keyboard, control layout, country marking, and model features should fit the serial-derived era. A mismatch may indicate a wrong table, replaced body panels, a rebrand, or a transcription error.
