1. Make a complete photo record
Take straight-on photographs of the front, rear, both sides, keyboard, carriage, paper table, platen knobs, underside, carrying case, and any accessories. Open the ribbon cover only if it moves freely. Photograph the typebars or type element, ribbon path, spool arrangement, and any inspection or dealer labels.
2. Classify the format
| Clue | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Compact body, case, narrower carriage | Portable or ultraportable |
| Large, heavy frame built to remain on a desk | Standard office machine |
| Power cord and conventional typebars | Electric typebar machine |
| Moving ball or wheel-shaped type element | Selectric-style or later electronic system |
3. Record names without interpreting them
Write down the badge exactly. Also note smaller names on the paper table, rear panel, ribbon cover, case hardware, motor plate, and underside. A dealer decal can be useful provenance, but it is not the manufacturer. Store brands and rebranded machines are common, especially among later portables.
4. Locate the serial number
Serial locations vary. Common areas include the frame under the carriage, the right or left rear rail, inside the ribbon-cover area, or on the underside. Move the carriage only if it travels freely. Photograph the number in place and transcribe every letter, dash, prefix, and leading zero.
Then identify the correct brand and model family before consulting a serial table. The same number sequence can mean nothing when applied to the wrong family.
5. Perform a light functional test
- Release the carriage lock if clearly identified.
- Press several keys gently and watch whether the typebars rise and return.
- Check shift, spacebar, backspace, margin release, and carriage return without forcing.
- Insert two sheets of plain paper to protect the platen.
- Type a short sample only if the mechanism moves normally.
Identification confidence levels
Confirmed: badge, model marking, body, and serial evidence agree. Probable: body and mechanism strongly match, but the model badge or plate is missing. Possible: it resembles a family, but key details conflict or are hidden. Preserve that uncertainty rather than promoting a guess into a fact.
