Typewriter Ribbons and Spools

“Universal” usually refers to ribbon dimensions

Many manual machines accept common half-inch ribbon, but original spool shape, center opening, retaining hardware, and reversing method can vary. Keep original metal spools whenever possible and transfer fresh ribbon onto them.

Eyelets and auto-reverse

Some machines reverse when a ribbon eyelet triggers a fork or lever. Others use tension or manual reversing. Installing the wrong ribbon configuration can stop the advance.

Two-color ribbons

Black/red ribbons require a functioning color selector and correct threading. Some machines use stencil positions or different selector labels.

Before ordering

• Photograph both installed spools and the ribbon path.
• Measure ribbon width.
• Record the machine model and spool hardware.
• Preserve original spool nuts, clips, and covers.
