Standard office machines

Standards are large, rigid, desk-based machines designed for sustained office work. They often offer heavier frames, wide carriages, and a substantial typing feel, but they are difficult and expensive to ship safely.

Portable machines

Portables are smaller machines normally paired with a carrying case. They can still be heavy. Their appeal combines usability, compact storage, color, and easier transport.

Ultraportables

Ultraportables reduce bulk further and may omit features. Hermes Baby/Rocket and slim Olivetti families occupy this lane. A lighter machine is not automatically a better typing experience for every user.

How to classify an unknown machine

• Measure overall width and carriage.
• Look for case mounting points or a fitted case.
• Compare frame rigidity and shell construction.
• Record tabulator, ribbon selector, and margin features.
